Saxophonist Sam Corkin put together the album commissioning 15 pieces from composers, with a brief to write something new using an earlier work. They were premiered at the Canterbury Festival and now they are released on the Palimpsest album.
My Ave Maris Stella Takes Flight starts from the ancient plainsong hymn. Layering the voices with the alto saxophone soaring over the top, Ave Maris Stella Takes Flight is a palimpsest. The lines build up, using the acoustic of the cathedral to create rich and luscious harmonies, while the solo line fills the vaulted ceiling.
The Choir of Canterbury Cathedral sounds glorious, conducted by David Newsholme, and Sam’s playing is just beautiful.
The album is released by Signum Classics and is available on Amazon, Presto and Spotify.
