Stille Nacht (from the trenches)
By Franz Gruber, arranged by Dominic McGonigal
For Choir a cappella (2007),
Voicing: SSAATTBB
Instruments: A hauntingly beautiful arrangement, written to accompany the reading of the Christmas Truce in World War I, when German and English troops sang Stille Nacht from their trenches. The arrangement starts imperceptibly quietly, as the sound slowly emerges from the trenches, growing into a full and rich rendition of one of the most popular Christmas tunes, Silent Night.
